Jun Martinez is a widely collected, award-winning impressionist painter from Manila, Philippines He has mounted 24 solo exhibits in prestigious venues in this country and abroad, most notably his sold-out Summers of Childhood series which showcased luminous renditions of children.
Martinez whose works portray mostly summer outdoor scenes, is recognized for his portraiture and his adroitness in shifting from one medium to another. He was four-times named “One of the country’s top 10 watercolorists.” Interestingly, Martinez has worked extensively on the subject of “myths and legends.”
His works depicting Filipino folktale are featured in three volumes of a book series entitled Myths & Legends of the Philippines by Marlene Aguilar-Pollard. Martinez’s works grace the covers and spreads of various books, including The Art Collectors’ Guide Book, Art Across the Philippines, 20th Century Filipino Artists, and The Lives and Loves of Artists and Models, all authored by Mr. Manuel Duldulao, and in the Encyclopedia of Philippine Art and Fine Artists of the Philippines.
JUN A. MARTINEZ
It is summertime sans the sweltering heat. Mellowed are the rays of sunlight streaming over the garden where little children are at play. So soothing, so good to the senses are the colors, sounds, and scents of a season that looks like forever.
Or so one gathers from Jun Martinez’s paintings of childhood in its moments of sunlit bliss. In the course of his 27-year career as a painter, Jun’s works on the theme “summers of childhood” (also the title of his series of shows) have fascinated discriminating gallery goers and earned for him recognition and respect in the specialist circle devoted to art. His works celebrate a season that is meant to be spent outdoors, under brilliant sunlight, where every element – human, flower, grass – throbs with life. And so these elements are animated under the artist’s hand by means of broken brush strokes and colors that define images in a very subtle manner. There is a literal backdrop, often a garden or deep foliage, but not a bloom nor a leaf has distinct shape. It is likewise very tender rendering that reveals the radiant faces of his characters – recurring but always coming up fresh – children being just themselves. None of the pieces are heavy as only soft and fresh colors are used. Yet every piece has a sureness behind it in terms of handling the media, color, and composition.
Through his art, Jun Martinez has reached out to art enthusiasts around and outside the Philippines, with over twenty successful solo exhibits and a string of exciting group shows. His recognizable and delightful impressions include commissioned paintings and portraits which now grace the walls of homes and offices of collectors whose names are numerous to mention.
“To Him Who has given me my gift, I give back all the glory.”
