I did two peices like this of owls. On both I applied about 8-10 layers of Burnt Umber letting each course dry before appying the next. I then scratched the paint away creating a different effect. Almost like reverse painting. I think it worked very well, especially in a monochrome pallet which I'm very fond of using.
