With the explosion in commercial fine art industry in the last decade, art firms are always on the lookout for art directors who can cement the company’s reputation in an ever-changing industry. Art directors are essentially creative managers who are responsible for coordinating the efforts of what is likely a staff with extremely diverse skills working in a wide variety of media: in print, on social media, on the radio, online, etc. Most often (and this is especially true for art directors in large municipalities), the art directors themselves have worked a number of jobs in the commercial art industry and have experience meeting deadlines for several different kinds of media themselves.

Yet an art directorship does not end with individual creativity (nor is that even often a large part of the job). Art directors help to focus the efforts of a large staff on particular projects, and often serve as liaisons for creative employees or “creatives” when they are negotiating contracts with other commercial art firms or with the business office in their own firm. While some aspiring art executives may also feel it is their duty to remain top dog in each of their respective disciplines, experienced art directors know that a cornerstone of longevity in their profession is to successfully recognize new talent, recruit it, and offer enough incentives and training for employees to remain within the company. Such recruitment can be difficult in an industry where graphic design software changes so quickly and where online art markets can be extremely competitive even in smaller cities.

In addition to these management and recruitment skills, art directors need to be able to fill in for many of their staff if the opportunity arises. Turnover in the commercial art industry is high and deadlines come swiftly, often coordinated among several different external companies who may need media in multiple forms. Employees may visit these firms in person and be unavailable at the home office if problems arise. Art directors often step in and write for their ad campaigns, or help instruct and / or train newer employees regarding the company’s requirements. Art directors are also an invaluable resource when it comes to recognizing and learning from the history a commercial art firm has within its particular online art market. In many cases, art directors are directly involved with facilitating and maintaining the relationships with outside companies, including their business offices and creatives. While graphic design and commercial art are on the whole extremely competitive, art directors following these principles in their day-to-day operations will stand a better chance at a longer tenure.
